Carpet Cleaning Tips

cleaning carpet

Carpets are the perfect way to make a room feel more homely and create an atmosphere of comfort and safety, but keeping them clean can be a real challenge. Especially for those with children or pets running around. Here are some ways in which you can remove any type of stain without damaging the carpet;

Coca-Cola & Sugary Drinks

It’s important to act fast when it comes to sugary fizzy drinks. Immediately absorb the liquid with kitchen roll or any other absorbent material around you. Press firmly on the liquid until the kitchen roll is no longer absorbing liquid. We then recommend using warm water, a touch of natural detergent and a clean sponge to soak and lightly rub the leftover stain/liquid. This will lift any leftover liquid. Using a clean dry towel soak up the water by applying light pressure to the carpet then vacuum to get any excess off the carpet. If the stain is still there using a professional carpet stain remover will do the job, following the instructions on the back of the bottle. Testing the product of a small patch beforehand is a good idea, this will prevent your carpet from having further damage.

Beer, Wine & Coffee

For best results, we recommend using a professional stain lifter. Beer, wine and coffee can extremely stain your carpet which is near to impossible to fully lift. However, before using a professional product you can follow the same steps as for “Coca-Cola & Sugary Drinks” this may give your carpet a better chance of surviving.

Wax

Wax can easily be removed if you intervene immediately. Let the wax harden, daunting we know. Place a couple of ice cubes wrapped in a cloth over the hardened wax, the ice moistens the wax and makes it easier to remove it by hand. Place a folded cotton handkerchief on the wax stain, using an iron, pass over the wax and cloth at low temperature. This will melt the wax in which the cotton cloth will absorb, lift the handkerchief and remove and dispose of. If you don’t have an old cotton handkerchief kitchen roll works well too, however, remember not to let the material get too warm, this could pose a fire risk.

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum, a substance we wish never touches anything. A material which is extremely difficult to remove from any surface. We recommend using ice to harden the substance, place a large chunk of ice in a plastic bag (make sure the bag is secure with no leaks) over the chewing gum, place a piece of kitchen roll between the chewing gum and bag to prevent moisture being absorbed by the carpet. When the chewing gum has fully hardened, you can attempt to remove it, it is up to you how you do this. Cutting off the gum is an easy way to remove it but will result in shorter carpet hairs. Picking it off will pull some hairs off but a lot less than cutting the gum off.

Glue

Glue can be removed with a sponge soaked in hot water, well squeezed. The important thing is to remove it immediately, and then let the carpet dry well with the cotton towel. Never use a hairdryer, hair dryers are too hot for carpets and will damage the hairs dramatically.

Ink

Immediately swab with kitchen paper, and then sprinkle the stain with salt, let the salt absorb the ink well. Vacuum up the salt and using a damp sponge to remove any remaining ink.

Mould

Mould should be removed immediately, to prevent it from spreading and becoming ‘toxic’. Clean it with water and vinegar and then dry well, to prevent it from forming more mould due to residual moisture.
